  1. Source: QUID 2007
  2. Means of payment in France (billions of transactions, in €, 2004) : €11,2 bn of which (in %)
    1. Plastic cards 37,1%
    2. cheques 28,8%
    3. Cash withdrawals 16,2%

  3. ?MANY FRENCH NET USERS STILL AREN'T HAPPY PAYING ONLINE?
  4. Online shopping has grown rapidly in France in the past few years, with the proportion of French Net users who shop online climbing from 33% in 2003 to 56% by 2006.(see endnote 1) One of the reasons behind that growth is that most French Net users have debit cards, deferred debit cards, or credit cards, all of which can be used to pay online.(see endnote 2) But although most French Net users have a Carte Bleue debit card they could use online, many don't want to.
  5. Some online shoppers aren't happy using plastic cards online. Most French online shoppers say that they prefer to pay online with debit cards and credit cards, with 87% of online shoppers mentioning some form of plastic card among their preferred methods for shopping online (see Figure 1-1).(see endnote 3) But this still leaves 13% of shoppers preferring alternatives. One in six shoppers say they like to pay using PayPal. Chéques (checks) are surprisingly popular, particularly among French women, with 17% of all online shoppers saying that they prefer to use chéques when shopping online. A few even say they prefer to pay in cash (on delivery).
  6. Many French Net users still worry about online security. Two-fifths of Net users worry about the security of online transactions, including many of the Net users who shop online.(see endnote 4) These fears are strongest among those who don't shop online, with nearly 58% of French Net users who don't shop online believing that personal financial information, like card numbers, is not secure when used to buy online. Along with wanting to see items before buying, security fears are one of the top two reasons why French Net users say they don't shop online, with 54% of Net users who don't shop online saying that they don't want to give out their personal financial information on the Net.
  7. Many young Net users don't have credit cards. Although most young French consumers have a debit card, many don't have a credit card, driving them to seek alternatives such as a parent's credit card or PayPal (see Figure 1-2).(see endnote 5) Despite their general enthusiasm for technology, many young Net users are more concerned about online security than Net users in their late 20s or early 30s.
