- As early as 1996, the French IT research centre Inria had managed to crack the weak SSL (128bits only at that time) algorithm through brute force by combining the processing power of 17 computers. But the idea that hackers would spend time and effort using brute force to decipher online transactions was in fact ludicrous. It was a hammer to crack a nut. Stealing credit cards, copying and duplicating them (yescards) and stealing passwords was generally deemed a better idea by hackers
